Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación belongs to the most important sacred buildings in Andalusia and shapes the historic cityscape with its imposing silhouette. Its construction began in the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier mosque, making it at the same time a witness to religious and cultural change. Especially striking is the mix of Renaissance and Baroque elements, which gives the building an elegant and at the same time monumental effect. Inside, the wide spatial proportions, artistically designed chapels, and a richly decorated choir with remarkable wood carving are impressive. The facade and the unfinished second tower project also add to its special character, which is why it is often given a playful nickname by local people.
