Freiburg Minster (Das Freiburger Münster) is one of the most important Gothic churches in Germany and, with its delicate tower, has shaped the cityscape for centuries. Especially impressive is the tower, which is about 116 metres high and, because of its elegant openwork spire, is often described as one of the most beautiful church towers in Europe. Construction began around 1200 and combines Romanesque beginnings with rich Gothic architecture. Inside, visitors can expect a solemn atmosphere, ornate stained glass windows, historic altars and numerous sculptures. Many details tell of the long building history and of the citys religious and civic self-image. The outer facade is also worth a close look, because figures, portals and stone carving show exceptional craftsmanship. The minster is not only a house of worship, but also an important cultural monument and a living place of faith. Anyone who appreciates architecture, history and sacred art will find here one of the most impressive buildings in southwestern Germany.
